New Roots series – Wednesday at 9pm
So I promised myself I wouldn’t watch this as we already know what happens to Kunta Kinte and it’s really upsetting and sad and also I don’t want to be angry all the time.
Low and behold I got sucked in by my partner who is very ‘black everything’ and loves a good debate too. So we sat and watched it and may I say, the actors and actresses are brilliant.
Shout out to the main man that plays Kunta Kinte, Malachi Kirby and Forest Whitaker who plays the Fiddler and I know there’s many more to come but I’m only on Episode 2.
So it’s heart breaking to watch our history but again we can’t deny it and I’m glad we still talk about it in this day and age because it something that shall Never Be Forgotten, it’s our history so we have to embrace it. I always feel I get bad looks form my partner though when I say I don’t want to watch the demise of our people, I mean there is so many to watch like, 12 years a Slave, Django (which is my all time favourite), The Help, The Butler, The Birth of a Nation, Hidden Figures, New Roots, Fence and Moonlight. Gosh how much can one girl take I hear myself saying to myself, while getting side eye from my partner. I say to him and I will say it to you, that there is so much more to us than slavery (hence the video on Hidden Figures) and hopefully with this knowledge and now seeing more black topics in magazines like Stylist, I almost thought black history month had come early (then realised, oh it’s USA’s black history month) with all the black things I’m now currently seeing apart from the usual stabbing and shootings and I shouldn’t even be able to say ‘apart from the usual’ it shouldn’t be happening! But that’s another talk for another day.
Anyway as much as it breaks my heart I am enjoying watching this new series of Roots, it’s giving me another look at things and makes me feel strong, fearless and makes me say as a black woman I CAN SUCCEED IN THIS LIFE, because I’m not making Kunta do all that for himself and to show us he wasn’t having it at every opportunity, he was looking to go back home to his ROOTS (Africa) and not let the ‘White Man’ kill his will to stay alive and keep striving. He made History, he didn’t give up, so T&F looking to do the same.
I remember a scene from last night when he tells his daughter Kizzie…..
‘They may Shackle your hands and your feet, but do not let them shackle your mind, you are a warrior ‘
And that’s how I woke up this morning feeling like a warrior ready for the world.
